The Commonwealth Leaders Academy is accepting applications for the inaugural cohort of the Commonwealth Young Leaders Fellowship (CYLF), a fully immersive 3 month leadership programme built for young people who are done talking about change and ready to lead it.
This is not your regular certificate program that ends with a PDF and a LinkedIn post. This fellowship is designed to place emerging leaders in real institutions, on real projects, alongside real policymakers and mentors, with two international convenings that will put you shoulder to shoulder with leaders from across the Commonwealth.
What Exactly Is the Commonwealth Young Leaders Fellowship?
The CYLF is the flagship leadership development programme of the Commonwealth Leaders Academy, created to equip young leaders with the skills, networks, and hands on experience needed to tackle some of the world’s most pressing challenges. Think governance, digital inclusion, peacebuilding, climate justice, and public service, all wrapped into a programme that blends learning with actual impact.
Running from August to October 2026, the fellowship unfolds over three structured months.
In month one, fellows go through an onboarding and immersion week designed to set the tone for the journey ahead. Month two places fellows in an institutional placement where the real work begins. By month three, fellows are implementing national level projects tied to their chosen theme, all building toward a final showcase where fellows present the impact of their work.
Along the way, every fellow will work through a Leadership Challenge Project, a hands on task that requires designing and implementing a local intervention connected to one of the Commonwealth wide themes. It is the kind of project you can point to on your CV and say, I built this.
Two Countries, One Unmatched Network
Here is where things get exciting. Selected fellows will travel internationally not once, but twice.
The first stop is the United Kingdom in late August, where fellows will be hosted at partner institutions in London. The second is Antigua and Barbuda, where fellows get a rare seat at activities connected to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. This is the kind of access most young professionals spend years trying to get, and it is being offered as part of the programme itself.
The Fellowship secretariat will also provide invitation and support letters to help with visa applications for both convenings, and where funding partnerships come through, partial travel bursaries or accommodation support may be extended to fellows on a needs basis.
Who Should Apply
This opportunity is open to young people between 18 and 35 years old from Commonwealth member states who have a track record, or a strong drive, toward community leadership, public service, or social impact work.
Whether you are organizing your community, building something innovative in tech, pushing for better policy, or simply refusing to sit on the sidelines while your society needs solutions, this fellowship wants you. What matters most is your commitment. Applicants must be prepared to fully commit to the entire 3 month cycle, including both in person convenings.
One important note before you apply. For this cohort, fellows are generally responsible for covering their own travel related costs, so it is worth planning ahead and exploring co funding options through your employer, institution, or a national youth agency if needed.
