Google has officially launched the Google Africa Applied AI Lab, a bold new initiative from the Accra AI Community Centre and the Google AI Futures Fund designed to fast track African entrepreneurs and researchers who are building with artificial intelligence. What Exactly Is the Google Africa Applied AI Lab?
Based at the Accra AI Community Centre in Ghana, the Lab is built to support founders from across the continent who are using cutting edge AI research to solve real, uniquely African problems. Think of it as a bridge between world class AI research and market ready products, pairing an elite group of African founders and researchers directly with Google experts to build solutions together.
The program culminates in a demo day where startups present their work to Googlers, top investors, and industry partners, opening the door to potential funding and continued support.
Who Can Apply

Google is looking for current full time founders as well as top researchers who are ready to become startup founders. That said, preference is given to startups with some funding history or commercial traction, from pre seed to Series A, but Google has made clear that all founders and researchers with strong ideas and a solid execution plan will be considered.
If selected, your startup will also get connected to some serious names in the African venture space, including 4DX Ventures, Norrsken22, Novastar Ventures, and Ventures Platform, alongside the Google AI Futures Fund itself.

Not every AI idea fits, but the scope here is wide. Google is specifically looking for products and services across five key areas shaping Africa’s future: the future of work, knowledge, software development, creativity, and entertainment.

What You Actually Get
Selected startups gain early access to Google DeepMind’s most advanced models, including Gemini, Gemma, and Veo, well before they are released to the general public. On top of that, teams receive hands on technical mentorship and go to market support from Google Research and other Google teams globally, plus the opportunity to connect with the VC partners mentioned earlier for potential funding.
One thing worth noting, using Google’s AI models in a materially impactful way is a requirement to join the program, though you are still free to use other tools and models alongside it.
How the Program Works
Applications open on July 1, 2026 and close on August 31, 2026, so there is a solid window to get your application together and make it count.
Once selected, the initial co-development period runs from mid September to early December, wrapping up with an in person product demo day at the Accra AI Community Centre in Ghana. The good news is you do not have to relocate to Ghana to be part of this. You are free to build and collaborate remotely throughout the program, with the final demo day being the key in person moment.
