African Creators Reach Global Audiences, but Monetization Remains a Major Hurdle

African creators are reaching global audiences, but payment barriers and limited monetisation opportunities continue to make earning a sustainable income difficult.

African creators are reaching audiences across the world through social media, streaming platforms and digital marketplaces. However, turning that attention into reliable income remains a major challenge, as gaps in payment infrastructure and limited monetisation opportunities continue to affect the continent’s growing creator economy.

The issue came into focus at a recent Moonshot by TechCabal discussion, where industry leaders examined the infrastructure creators need to build sustainable businesses. Speakers highlighted that having an international audience does not automatically mean creators can easily receive payments from clients, brands or fans outside their home countries.

The income gap is also reflected in industry figures. The Nigerian Creator Economy Report 2025 found that 56.45 per cent of Nigerian creators earn less than $100 monthly from their work, while only 3.23 per cent earn more than $5,000. Although creators are gaining visibility, platform payouts and irregular brand partnerships make it difficult for many to depend on content creation as a stable source of income.

Payment access is one part of the problem. Creators working with international clients may encounter currency conversion costs, delays and difficulties receiving cross-border payments. Businesses such as Raenest and Mainstack are developing financial and commerce tools to help creators collect payments and manage their earnings, but access to reliable services remains uneven across African markets.

Industry growth will therefore depend on more than increasing followers and views. Better payment systems, stronger distribution networks, protection against piracy and more consistent monetisation opportunities are needed to help creators turn their influence into sustainable businesses. Until these gaps are addressed, reaching a global audience may remain easier than earning a reliable living from it.
