If you are a driven, community-rooted young African with dreams bigger than your current circumstances, this scholarship was literally designed for you. Here is everything you need to know.

Every once in a while, an opportunity comes along that has the power to completely change the trajectory of a person’s life. The McGill University Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program 2027 is exactly that kind of opportunity. And if you are a young, ambitious African leader with a passion for public health, nutrition, agriculture, or policy reform, you might just be who this scholarship is looking for.

We are talking about a fully funded master’s degree at one of Canada’s most prestigious universities, covering everything from your tuition to your flight, your accommodation, your laptop, your feeding, and even your return trip home after graduation. Yes, everything.

What Is the McGill University Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program?

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at McGill University is open to talented leaders and changemakers at the graduate (master’s) level, from across Sub-Saharan Africa who aspire to improve and transform nutrition, public health, public policy, and sustainable agriculture sectors across Africa.

It is not just a scholarship in the traditional sense. It is a full leadership investment. The 2027 scholarship funded by the Mastercard Foundation covers full tuition, accommodation, flights, living expenses, feeding, books, a laptop, and all other study-related expenses. McGill University itself is consistently ranked among the top universities in the world, and studying in Montreal gives scholars access to a vibrant, multicultural city that is widely considered one of the most affordable major cities in North America for students.

What Does the Scholarship Actually Cover?

This is where it gets really exciting. The scholarship package includes pre-arrival and immigration support, full international student tuition, on-campus housing, a personal monthly stipend covering food, personal expenses, and transportation, academic tools and resources including a book allowance, laptop, and tutoring, a tailored leadership and professional development program, and post-graduation transition expenses including convocation regalia and a return flight home.

That is not just a scholarship. That is a complete transformation package.

Who Is Eligible to Apply?

Before you start getting excited and sharing this with everyone you know (which you absolutely should), let us make sure you tick the right boxes. To be considered, you must be admissible to one of the eligible programs at McGill University, must have never registered for or completed a master’s degree, must be a citizen of and currently living in a Sub-Saharan African country, must hold a valid passport and be admissible to Canada as an international student, must have an exceptional record of service, leadership, and community activity, and must demonstrate a genuine desire to give back to your home community. Applicants must also be under 35 years of age at the time of application.

One more thing worth noting: applicants with First Class Honours or equivalent academic standing have a stronger chance of being admitted. So if you have that grade profile, do not sleep on this.

What Documents Will You Need?

Getting your paperwork together early is one of the smartest moves you can make. To apply for the McGill University Mastercard Scholarship, applicants must be ready to submit university transcripts, letters of reference or recommendation, and program-specific requirements.

How Does the Application Process Work?

This is important, so pay close attention. The process is structured and sequential. You cannot jump straight to the McGill application portal. Here is how it flows:

First, determine your eligibility. Then attend a mandatory information session between June 23 and July 15 to learn more about the eligibility requirements and the application process. After that, complete the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program Application Form between August 3 and 21, 2026. Once your application is pre-screened, you will be asked to provide additional documentation. Successful pre-screened applicants will then be invited to apply to McGill University, and those applicants will receive a fee waiver along with detailed instructions on how to apply for admission.

To put it plainly: you apply to the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program first. McGill only invites you to apply for admission after you have passed the pre-screening stage. Do not skip steps and do not submit outside the official process.

The Program will not accept applications submitted outside the set application process.

This Is Your Sign to Apply

Here is the truth about opportunities like this: most people who are qualified never apply. Not because they are not good enough, but because they talked themselves out of it before they even tried. If you are a young African leader with a vision for your continent, a strong academic record, and a genuine drive to come back and make a difference, this program was built with someone like you in mind.

McGill University is one of the most respected institutions in the world. The Mastercard Foundation is one of the most influential philanthropic organizations investing in African talent today. Together, they are offering you not just a degree but a platform, a network, a living stipend, and a leadership development journey that will prepare you for decades of impact.

The deadline is August 21, 2026. The information sessions begin June 23. That means the window is open right now, and the clock is already ticking.
