KWI also offers partial reimbursement for travel to and from Essen. The fellowship runs for six months, from 1 April to 30 September 2027, and the dates are fixed, so this is not something you can shift around your schedule.
Who Should Apply
This fellowship is built for postdoctoral researchers in the humanities, cultural studies, or the social sciences. You need to have completed your PhD, and for this particular call, that means having finished it in 2021 or later, which keeps you within the six year postdoctoral window KWI is working with, sometimes referred to as R2 level under the European Framework for Research Careers.
Career breaks will not count against you automatically either. If you stepped away for caregiving responsibilities or because your academic freedom was under threat, KWI explicitly invites you to explain that in your cover letter, and they say it will be factored into how your eligibility is assessed. That is a level of consideration a lot of fellowship programs simply do not offer.
Researchers from anywhere in the world are welcome to apply, including African scholars whose work aligns with KWI’s interdisciplinary focus. German nationals can apply too, but only if they are currently employed at an institution outside Germany. One important detail, this fellowship is built for individual researchers, so applications from groups or research teams will not be considered.
What KWI Is Actually Looking For
Your research does not need to fit a rigid category, but it helps if it connects to KWI’s ongoing focus areas, which include science studies, visual literacy, aesthetic practices, historical impact, and dialogue between the cultural and social sciences. What Life at KWI Looks Like
Fellows are expected to be present at least three days a week and to take part in the institute’s academic life, including colloquiums, reading groups, lectures, and conferences. You will also be expected to contribute to the KWI Blog and sit through an entry and an exit interview. Teaching is not required, though you are welcome to sit in on lectures and seminars at nearby universities if you want to. Selected fellows may also get the chance to organize their own workshop, depending on scheduling and resources, so if that interests you, it is worth mentioning in your application.
Being based at KWI also puts you inside the University Alliance Ruhr, which links the universities of Duisburg Essen, Bochum, and Dortmund, with Düsseldorf, Cologne, Münster, and Bielefeld all within reach too. You will need a CV, a list of your publications, your PhD certificate, and a project proposal describing your planned research at KWI, capped at 5,000 characters. Everything must be combined into a single PDF file no larger than 20MB and written in English.

Everything is submitted by email, sent directly to international.fellowship@uni-due.de, before the deadline of 17 August 2026 at midnight Central European Time. KWI has been clear that they will not consider applications that arrive late, come in multiple files, or include a proposal that runs over the character limit, so it genuinely pays to read the full call carefully before you hit send.
