It exists to build a global network of future leaders who genuinely understand China and its role in the world, and who can carry that understanding into whatever field they go on to shape. All classes are conducted in English, so language is not a barrier to entry, though every scholar leaves with real exposure to Chinese language and culture by the end of the year.
What “Fully Funded” Actually Means Here
This scholarship does not do things halfway. Selected scholars receive full tuition and fees, room and board, round trip airfare to and from Beijing, an in country study tour, course books and supplies, a laptop and smartphone, comprehensive health insurance, and a personal stipend to cover day to day living. If you are selected for an interview, even your travel and accommodation for that stage are covered.
In practice, this means a scholar can walk into the program with almost nothing out of pocket beyond personal spending money, and walk out a year later with a master’s degree from a globally respected university and a network stretching across governments, boardrooms, and institutions worldwide.
Who Should Be Applying
Eligibility is refreshingly open when it comes to academic background. You need an undergraduate degree, or be on track to complete one before August 1 of your enrollment year, and there is no requirement around what you studied. Whether your degree is in engineering, law, medicine, the arts, or something entirely unrelated to global affairs, what matters is how clearly you can explain what leading in your field will look like after this experience.
You also need to be between 18 and 28 years old as of August 1 of your enrollment year, and you need strong English proficiency, either through prior study in English or a recognized test score such as TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English Test, depending on your academic background.
Beyond the paperwork, what the selection committee is really searching for is harder to fake. They want leadership ability, intellectual sharpness, empathy, open mindedness, and a track record that shows exemplary character, not just an impressive transcript.
What the Application Actually Involves
This is not a scholarship you fill out over a weekend, so give yourself real time. You will need a current resume or CV capped at two pages, two essays, a Leadership Essay of 750 words and a Statement of Purpose of 500 words, official transcripts from every post secondary institution you attended, three letters of recommendation from people who genuinely know your work, and a short video introduction no longer than one minute.
The entire application is completed online in English, and you do not have to finish it in one sitting, so you can work on it in stages and save your progress as you go. One thing worth noting, the program explicitly requires that all written material be composed by you personally, without the use of AI writing tools, so this is one application where your own voice needs to carry the entire weight.
The Timeline You Need to Know
For applicants outside of Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, the application deadline is September 9, 2026 at 3 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, and late submissions are not accepted under any circumstances, including technical issues or last minute emergencies. Shortlisted candidates move into the selection cycle in October and November, with interviews conducted by an international panel of leaders from business, government, and academia. Successful scholars begin the program in August 2027.
