EMBL-EBI is hiring an Outreach and Engagement Officer in Cambridge, and thanks to the organisation’s special international status, qualified applicants are exempt from the usual UK visa process. Family allowances, free housing perks, and a tax-free salary included.
If you have ever stared at a UK job listing and felt your excitement deflate the moment you got to “must have existing right to work,” this one is different. EMBL-EBI, the European Bioinformatics Institute, just opened applications for an Outreach and Engagement Officer, and because of the organisation’s unique international standing, successful candidates from anywhere in the world are exempt from the usual UK work visa process entirely. No sponsorship gymnastics. No years of experience begging an employer to file paperwork on your behalf. Just a genuine, open door.
And the offer on the table is one worth paying attention to.
What the role actually involves
This job sits inside Europe PMC, one of the world’s most important open science platforms, connecting researchers, developers, and institutions to more than 47 million research outputs across the globe. As Outreach and Engagement Officer, you would be at the centre of how that platform stays visible and useful in a world where AI and text mining tools are rapidly changing how people search for and use scientific literature.
Day to day, you would be:
- Running social media campaigns and content across LinkedIn, Bluesky, and community channels like Slack
- Building relationships with 35 international funders and open science partners
- Creating and delivering training sessions, webinars, and presentations for researchers and developers
- Shaping communication strategy for early-career and established scientists, who engage very differently
- Attending conferences and events, both virtually and in person
- Contributing to the Europe PMC website and tracking engagement performance across the board
If you enjoy storytelling, community building, and being the bridge between complex science and the people who need it, this role was practically built for you.
What they are looking for
EMBL-EBI wants someone with a background in communications, marketing, information science, or life sciences, and real experience running organisational social media or engagement campaigns that actually grew reach. Experience in scientific publishing or research environments is a bonus, not a strict requirement, and familiarity with AI tools relevant to communications work will work in your favour. Strong writing and the ability to speak to very different audiences matter more than a perfect CV.
Now, about that pay and package
The role pays £3,452.00 per month after tax, on a three year fixed term contract, and that is before you even get to the extras. Successful hires also receive monthly family, child, and non-resident allowances, an annual salary review, private medical insurance for you and your immediate family, 30 days of annual leave plus public holidays, and a relocation package that includes an installation grant if you need one.
There is also a free shuttle bus, an on-site gym, an on-site nursery, casual dress code, and an active sports and social club. Non-UK residents specifically get education grants for private schooling and financial support to travel home every second year. This is not just a job offer. It is a full relocation plan wrapped into one listing.
The role is hybrid, with two days on-site each week (Monday and Tuesday) at the Wellcome Genome Campus in Hinxton, Cambridge, one of the most scenic and scientifically important campuses in the UK.
Why this one matters
Roles that combine a genuine international pathway with tax-free monthly pay, family support, and long-term job security do not come around often. EMBL currently employs staff from 76 nationalities and is actively looking to add more. If you have been searching for a legitimate, well-paying route into UK-based work without the usual visa headache, this is exactly that kind of opportunity, and it will not stay open for long.
Applications close on 27th September 2026, and EMBL has already stated it may close the listing early if a strong candidate is found before then. If this role speaks to you, do not sit on it.
