What This Internship Actually Is
CIVICUS is recruiting a Civic Space Research Intern to support its global civic space research work. This is a remote, full-time internship opportunity for entry-level candidates interested in human rights, civic freedoms, international development, research, and civil society advocacy.
The role sits within the CIVICUS Monitor team, which is the unit responsible for tracking the state of civic space globally. The intern will support the CIVICUS Monitor team, particularly ahead of the annual People Power Under Attack reports. The role involves research, data coding, incident tracking, administrative support, and communication-related tasks.
In plain terms, you will be contributing to real, published research that influences how the world understands and responds to threats against civic freedoms. That is not something most internships can say.
The Details You Need to Know
This is a full-time, six-month internship contract with a stipend of USD 1,200 per month. The position is fully remote, entry-level, and reports to the Civic Space Research Lead.
Six months of paid, remote, globally relevant research experience. For an entry-level role, that is genuinely hard to beat.
What You Will Be Doing
The role spans three key areas. On the research side, the intern will support the implementation of the CIVICUS Monitor civic space incidents tool, assist with data coding of civic space incidents, support research ahead of the People Power Under Attack report, collect regional case studies where required, and draft fact sheets and other research materials as assigned.
Beyond research, the intern will also support the Civic Space Research team with administrative and logistical tasks, assist with organising workshops and meetings, and handle other administrative duties as assigned. On the communications side, the intern will support team communication and information-sharing activities, assist with social media and other communication platforms, and support the creation of communication visuals using designated platforms.
It is a well-rounded role that builds real skills across research, coordination, and communications, which is exactly the kind of breadth that shapes strong early-career professionals.
Who Should Apply
Applicants should have a completed bachelor’s degree in International Relations, Political Science, or a related field, excellent written and spoken English, and knowledge or experience conducting research on human rights. An understanding of international human rights frameworks related to freedom of association, peaceful assembly, and freedom of expression is also required.
Proficiency in any United Nations language is an added advantage. So if you speak French, Arabic, Spanish, Chinese, or Russian alongside English, that works in your favour.
