No degree, no problem. The Federal Government’s 2026 TVET Program is giving Nigerians free vocational training, a monthly stipend of ₦22,500, startup kits, and job placement support, and the door is open to anyone ready to learn.

Here is something the Nigerian government is doing right that not enough young people know about. The Federal Ministry of Education has launched the 2026 Technical and Vocational Education and Training Program, popularly called TVET, and it is one of the most practical and accessible opportunities the government has put on the table for young Nigerians in a very long time.

This is not a scholarship for university students. This is not limited to people with O’Level results or WAEC certificates. One of the tracks in this program requires nothing more than your NIN and BVN to get started. If you have hands, a willingness to learn, and a trade you want to build a career around, the Federal Government is ready to foot the bill and put money in your pocket every month while you train.

That is not a slogan. That is the actual structure of this program, and every Nigerian between the ages of 17 and 35 who has been sitting on the sidelines of the economy needs to read this carefully.

What Is the Federal Government TVET Program?

TVET stands for Technical and Vocational Education and Training. It is a flagship initiative of the Federal Ministry of Education designed to do one very specific thing: give young Nigerians the kind of practical, hands-on skills that actually lead to employment and entrepreneurship in the real world.

The program works through partnerships with certified training centers spread across the country, so regardless of where you are in Nigeria, there is likely a participating center within reach. Training is fully funded by the Federal Government through NELFund, which means you pay absolutely nothing for tuition. On top of that, enrolled participants receive a monthly stipend of ₦22,500 throughout the duration of their program, completion certificates that are industry-recognised, takeoff grants to help you start something of your own after training, startup kits, and career guidance and job placement assistance.

This is the kind of wraparound support that is rare even from private sector programs. The fact that it is coming from the Federal Government and is available to Nigerians across the country makes it especially significant.

Two Tracks, One Goal

The TVET Program runs two distinct tracks, and understanding which one is right for you is the first step to applying.

The first track is the Short-Term Certificate Programme, commonly called the STC. This is designed for people who are ready to pick up a practical skill and enter the workforce as quickly as possible. The STC runs for six months and the eligibility requirements are as minimal as they come. All you need is a valid National Identification Number and a Bank Verification Number. No academic certificate of any kind is required. If you are a young Nigerian who never completed secondary school, this track was built with you in mind.

The second track is the Vocational Education and Innovation Programme, known as VEI. This one runs for a full year and is designed for people who already have some informal training, apprenticeship experience, or basic educational background and want to formalise and deepen what they know. To qualify for the VEI, you need either a Recognition of Prior Learning document which is proof of skills you already have from informal or apprenticeship settings, or a First School Leaving Certificate, or any certificate from a non-formal education program such as training from an NGO, a religious institution, a nomadic education initiative, or a community program.

Both tracks lead to the same destination: certified, job-ready, empowered Nigerians with the skills and support to build sustainable livelihoods.

What You Stand to Gain

The benefits of the TVET Program go well beyond the training itself. Participants enjoy completely free tuition paid directly by the Federal Government, a monthly stipend of ₦22,500 throughout the program, hands-on practical training in high-demand trade areas, an industry-recognised completion certificate at the end of the program, takeoff grants and startup kits to help you launch your own business or trade after graduation, and career guidance and job placement support to connect you with employment opportunities once you finish.

For any young Nigerian who has been wondering how to break into a trade, build a skill, or start something sustainable without access to capital or a university education, this program removes virtually every barrier that would otherwise stand in the way.

Why This Program Matters Right Now

Nigeria has one of the youngest populations in the world, and for too long, the country’s education system has pushed young people toward university degrees as the only credible path to a livelihood. The reality on the ground tells a very different story. Skilled tradespeople in Nigeria, whether they work in construction, electrical installations, fashion, welding, auto repairs, technology, or food production, are in consistently high demand and can earn significantly more than many fresh university graduates.

The TVET Program is a direct investment in this reality. It is the Federal Government saying, clearly and with money behind it, that vocational and technical skills are not a consolation prize. They are a genuine career path, and Nigeria needs more people walking it.

Beyond individual benefit, every Nigerian who completes this program and launches a trade or enters a skilled workforce is contributing to the productive base of the economy. That is why the government has put takeoff grants and startup kits into the equation. They are not just training people. They are seeding the next generation of small businesses and skilled service providers across the country.

The Trades You Can Train In

One of the strongest features of this program is the sheer breadth of trade options on offer. Whether your interest is in construction, technology, agriculture, fashion, or beauty, there is a track waiting for you. The available programs include Electrical Installation, Welding and Fabrication, Painting, Decoration and Finishes, Floor Cladding, Tiling and Interlocking, Bricklaying, Blocklaying and Concreting, Network System Installation, Computer Hardware and GSM Repair and Maintenance, Social Media Communications, Creative Media and Digital Media Production, Motorcycle and Tricycle Repair, Vulcanising and Tire Repair, Auto-body Works and Panel Beating, Automobile Mechanic, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning, Plumbing and Pipe-fitting, Woodwork, Carpentry and Joinery, Furniture Making and Upholstery, Blacksmithing, Solar PV Installation and Maintenance, Automobile CNG Conversion and Maintenance, Mechanised Agriculture, Livestock Farming including Bee Keeping, Poultry and Animal Husbandry, Fashion Design and Garment Making, and Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology.

Twenty-four trade options across some of the most in-demand sectors in Nigeria today. Whatever skill you have been thinking about turning into a career, there is a very good chance it is on this list.

How to Apply

The application process is fully online and more straightforward than most people expect. Here is exactly how it works.

Start by visiting the TVET portal at tvet.education.gov.ng. The website lays out all the program details, so take a moment to go through it before proceeding. When you are ready, click the Apply button and you will land on the signup page.

Signup begins with a NIN verification step. Enter your National Identification Number and your date of birth, then click proceed. You will then be asked to provide your phone number and a valid email address. An SMS confirmation will be sent to the phone number linked to your NIN, and once that is verified, your account on the TVET portal is automatically created.

From there, you log in and choose your preferred program, either the six-month Short-Term Certificate or the one-year Vocational Education and Innovation track. You then fill in your personal details, upload your supporting documents, choose your preferred training center and the trade you want to pursue, and submit your application. A confirmation will follow and the program administrators will reach out with the next steps.

The entire process happens online. All you need to get started is your NIN and BVN. The deadline for this cycle has not been officially specified, which means the portal is open right now, but it can close at any time without prior notice. The smartest move is to apply today.

This Is Your Moment

Nigeria’s youth unemployment challenge is real, but so is the solution sitting right in front of you. Whether you are a school leaver, a young person with informal training looking for a certificate, or someone who simply wants to build a skill and create something of your own, this program has a place for you.

Do not let this pass you by because you assumed it was not for someone like you. It is exactly for someone like you.
